Frequently asked questions
The short answers to what most anglers want to know before they come.
Do I need a fishing licence?
Yes. To fish on your own you need a valid fishing licence (Fischereischein) plus a permit (Erlaubnisschein) for the stretch. Without a valid licence we cannot issue a permit.
Where and how do I get the permit?
We issue the permit in person - there is no online purchase and no online payment. The easiest way is to reach us via the contact page (phone or email); we then arrange the handover.
Do I have to be a member of a club?
No. You do not need any club membership. Our permits are guest cards: with a valid fishing licence we can issue everything from a day ticket (from €8) to a season permit. The fishing licence itself, however, is always required.
What does it cost?
Everything from a day ticket (from 8.00 €) to an annual permit, for Section 7 and the Three-Section card. You will find the full price list on the „Permits“ page.
Can I fish from both banks?
Yes. Both cards allow fishing from either bank. The boundaries of the stretches are marked on the ground by white signs.
Which closed seasons and minimum sizes apply?
The official Bavarian closed seasons and minimum sizes (AVBayFiG) apply, plus any stricter local rules - the permit is always binding. You will find an overview per species under „Rules & closed seasons“. Undersized fish or fish caught in the closed season must be returned immediately and carefully.
Can children and young people fish?
The youth fishing licence was abolished on 1 January 2025. From age 7 to 18, fishing is only allowed in the responsible company of an adult licence holder; a permit is still required. The fishing exam is possible from age 12 and an own licence from age 14.
How do I get here?
By train on the Saale valley line (Gemünden-Bad Kissingen): the Wolfsmünster halt and Gräfendorf station are both a short walk from the water. By car the valley is easily reached via Gemünden am Main. See „Region & visiting“ for tips.
Which stretch is right for me?
Section 7 (1,587 m, both banks) is a fly-fishing favourite. The Three-Section card (about 4.5-5 km) runs from the deep impoundment past the Schondra mouth to fast barbel runs. More under „The water“ - and we are happy to advise you in person.
Where can I fish in Lower Franconia?
On the Franconian Saale in the lower Saale valley between the Spessart and the Rhön: our two stretches lie between Wolfsmünster and Gräfendorf, a few kilometres before the river joins the Main at Gemünden. With a day ticket and a valid licence you can fish here as a guest too.
Is the Saale valley worth it for visiting anglers?
Yes. The valley between the Spessart and the Rhön is a recognised resort with places to stay right by the water, the Saale valley railway running to the bank and quiet, varied stretches - from trout and grayling water to the deep impoundment. See „Region & visiting“.
Still a question?
Just get in touch - we are happy to help, and to say which stretch is fishing best right now.
