Section 7

Section 7

1,587 m of the Saale near Schonderfeld & Wolfsmünster

Section 7 starts just above the Schonderfeld bridge (at the Fischbach) and runs to about 100 m above Wolfsmünster station. It can be fished from both banks and is a favourite among fly anglers, some travelling from nearby Hesse. Fast, oxygen-rich riffles alternate with calm, slow stretches.

Upper reach – rough water

Oxygen-rich and ideal for salmonids: grayling, brown trout and barbel dominate here – a paradise for the fly rod.

Groynes below Schonderfeld

The groynes serve big pike as spawning grounds in April and May. In the calmer stretches the odd exceptionally large nase takes the hook.

Lower reach – calm water

Further down the Saale flows more gently: good water for carp, tench, coarse fish and proper eels.

Three-Section card

Three-Section card

≈ 4.5–5 km from Gräfendorf to Wolfsmünster

Three very different stretches on one card: from the deep impoundment above the Gräfendorf weir, past the rushing Schondra mouth, to the fast barbel runs. Fishable from both banks; the boundaries are marked by white signs.

Above the Gräfendorf weir

A long impoundment, up to 5 m deep before the weir: big carp, good tench, coarse fish, eels and heavy, wary pike. A bypass channel with a fish ladder allows migration.

Below the weir to the Schondra mouth

A completely different picture: fast and rough. The sandbanks at the Schondra mouth are a habitat for young fish. Plenty of pike, brown trout and grayling – ideal for fly and spinning gear.

Below the „Zum Saaletal“ inn

A fast-flowing stretch with a largely open left bank. Big barbel hold in the strong current, brown trout closer to the bank – perfect for dabbing with a long rod.

What you need

Before you cast

To fish the Saale you need two things: a valid fishing licence (Fischereischein – issued by the state, normally after passing the fishing exam) AND a permit (Erlaubnisschein) for the stretch – the latter you get from us. Fishing without a permit counts as poaching.

Children & young people

Since 1 January 2025 Bavaria no longer issues a youth fishing licence. Children and young people from age 7 up to 18 may fish themselves – but only in the responsible company of an adult who holds a valid fishing licence. A permit for the water is still required. The fishing exam can be taken from age 12, your own licence from age 14.
